Understanding Your Hardie® Shingle Estimate

This calculator provides an estimate for the amount of Hardie® Shingle Siding you might need. Here’s how to interpret the numbers:

  • Gross Wall Area: This is the total surface area calculated from the length and height you entered, before accounting for windows, doors, or waste.
  • Waste Factor: Siding projects always require more material than the exact surface area due to cuts for gables, angles, around windows/doors, and potential mistakes. A typical waste factor is 10-15%. For complex designs or less experienced installers, a higher percentage might be safer.
  • Coverage per Bundle: Hardie® Shingle Siding products specify how many square feet a single bundle will cover. This value can vary between different Hardie® shingle styles (e.g., Straight Edge, Staggered Edge, Half-Rounds) and exposures. The default 25 sq ft is a common value, but always verify this with the specific product data sheet for the shingles you choose.
  • Estimated Bundles Needed: This is the calculated number of bundles, rounded up to the nearest whole bundle, required to cover your total area including the waste factor.

Important Considerations:

  • Openings: This calculator does not automatically subtract areas for windows or doors. For a more precise estimate, calculate the area of large openings and subtract it from your gross wall area before using this tool, or manually adjust the bundles down slightly. However, siding cut from these openings is often used in other areas, partially offsetting the reduction.
  • Product Specifics: James Hardie offers various shingle products. Coverage rates can differ. Always refer to the official product literature or consult your James Hardie dealer.
  • Starter Strips & Trim: Remember to account for starter strips, trim boards (like HardieTrim® boards), and other necessary accessories separately.
