Calories Calculator in Common Phrases
What is a calorie?
A calorie is a unit of energy commonly used to measure the energy content of foods and drinks. In nutrition, the term “calorie” usually refers to a kilocalorie (kcal), which is 1000 “small” calories. It represents the amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of 1 kilogram of water by 1 degree Celsius. Our bodies use the energy from calories to perform all essential functions, from breathing and thinking to physical activity.
Calorie Calculation Formulas
While various complex formulas exist in nutrition, for basic recipe calculations, we often deal with simple multiplication or division. Here are the principles behind the calculators above:
1. Calculating Total Calories for an Ingredient:
Amount (g) × (Calories per 100g / 100) = Total Calories
This formula helps you find the total calories for a specific amount of an ingredient, given its caloric density per 100 grams (or other standard unit).
EX: 250 grams of chicken breast (165 Calories per 100g)
250 × (165 / 100) = 412.5 Total Calories
The calculator above allows you to find any of these three values if the other two are known.
2. Calculating Calories per Serving:
Total Dish Calories / Number of Servings = Calories per Serving
This is useful for understanding the caloric content of individual portions of a larger recipe.
EX: A lasagna with 2000 total calories, divided into 8 servings
2000 / 8 = 250 Calories per Serving
3. Calculating Total Calories from Serving Size:
Calories per Serving × Number of Servings = Total Calories
If you know the calories per serving and how many servings you want, you can find the total calories.
EX: If your meal has 350 Calories per serving and you want 2 servings
350 × 2 = 700 Total Calories
4. Calculating Required Ingredient Amount for Target Calories:
Target Calories / (Calories per 100g / 100) = Required Amount (g)
This helps when you have a calorie target and want to know how much of an ingredient to use.
EX: To get 300 calories from avocado (160 Calories per 100g)
300 / (160 / 100) = 187.5 grams of avocado
