Enter your current, temperature rise, and copper thickness into the calculator to determine your PCB trace width.

PCB Trace Width Calculation Formula

The following formula is used to calculate the PCB trace width.

Trace Width = Current / (k * (Temperature Rise ^ 0.44) * (Copper Thickness ^ 0.725))

Variables:

  • Trace Width is the width of the trace in mils (thousandths of an inch)
  • Current is the current flowing through the trace in amperes (A)
  • Temperature Rise is the allowed temperature rise above ambient temperature in degrees Celsius (°C)
  • Copper Thickness is the thickness of the copper in ounces (oz)

To calculate the trace width, divide the current by the product of the constant k, the temperature rise raised to the power of 0.44, and the copper thickness raised to the power of 0.725.
